Good nutrition (particularly if you are breastfeeding), adequate rest and
appropriate exercise are key.
If you have had an episiotomy or Cesarean section, you will need to follow
specific procedures to ensure proper healing. Ask the hospital staff to provide
you with all the information you need for your particular self-care requirements.
In order to feel your best, physically, pay attention to your diet and appearance.
Try to get some exercise as soon as you feel up to it...but don't put unreasonable
demands on yourself in these areas.
Your doctor can advise you as to a healthy diet and exercise plan that won't
jeopardize your baby getting all the nutrients she needs, nor be too strenuous for you.
Accept that it is normal to feel "down" occasionally, or even angry, provided you
don't take that anger out on your baby.
If you feel that your depression or anger is interfering with your happiness or
is unsolvable, consult your doctor for information about the frequently
experienced condition of postpartum depression before taking any medications.
Depending on its severity, effects on your mental health can vary; your doctor
can assess your condition and advise you on how to best treat it.
